While choosing alternative energy we need to ensure that the alternatives are as dependable as the traditional fossil based energy sources. The big issue regarding the use of Wind energy is the risk that the wind will drop away. If this happens then the event will be a likely lights out state and therefore will without delay downfall the reputation of renewable energy.
To build reliability into this great commodity, we need to overcome the difficulty of intermittency. One plan of overcoming this has been launched by an Irish company called the Spirit of Ireland. They plan to use wind energy on our coast to pump sea water into man made Fjords (lakes) which can be controlled by a set of dames. the man made lakes will store the water until we get a reduced wind supply, Once the wind drops off the gates of the dame are opened up to allow the water flow through generators to create a solid, guaranteed source of electrical energy.
If we can harness the great potential that wind energy on our western coast holds and also tap into the vast amounts of wave and seaward wind energy then Ireland could become the “Rechargeable Battery of Europe”
If this can be developed, I think that there is a definite future for the Irish economy to grow as a major supplier of not only wind energy, but if our government plans it right we could develop some series expertise in this industry through our universities and become leaders in the renewable energy race.
