Most people under seventy years of age in the West will not have encountered bed bugs. This is mainly due to improved living conditions, DDT and good public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and wiped out the problem in the more affluent countries.

Most individuals in the West will never see a bed bug. In a way, they are an old-fashioned household pest. This is because houses are cleaner and mattresses are synthetic. Having said that, you may encounter them. You might not see them, because they go into hiding during the daytime and only come out at night. However, the next morning you will know that they have been because you will have bite marks. Bed bugs suck your blood.

There is a massive upsurge of public opinion going against the use of chemicals whenever possible. People are instead re-evaluating their grandmother’s old home remedies and they are not being given much encouragement from what I can see.
