Preparing With Your Family When There Is An Approaching Storm

It is always possible to forecast an impending storm by looking at the way the weather suddenly turns cold and know that the cold weather is setting in again. It is impossible to do anything to change the weather patterns but you can always prepare for it.

Getting ready for a blizzard means one must get the items needed in case of power outages also. You will therefore need to get standby heating sources like fireplace, some firewood or even kerosene heater.

Try to make the necessary supplies for the source of heating you have settled on. Then there is the issue of emergency lighting, like flashlights and batteries. Another emergency contingent will be the supply of canned food, bottled water, first aid kits and so forth.

When the cold weather begins, one needs to wear warm clothes that will be put on in layers as the temperatures will keep falling gradually so the body will keep adjusting to the changes in temperature. As the time goes, one may add gloves and socks to avoid frostbite; then later add blankets to keep warm at night when needed.

Keeping a thermometer is good because it will be needed to check the temperatures in the home constantly. Shut the water source because frozen conditions may cause too much damage even to the plumbing.

The pipes should be drained by opening the faucets in order to avoid damaging them. In case the temperature threatens to go too low, it might necessitate your moving to a shelter if it is still safe to leave your home.

After the storm, there would be need to shovel the snow. For this work, you will need shovel and rock salt. Safety is paramount so call for help when needed even from neighbors.

Remember shoveling for snow is not easy on the muscles and so it can cause injury. You will wait for the storm to ease and then begin shoveling snow. Please keep doing it constantly.

It should be noted that enough preparation before the storm can make a difference between life and death before and after a huge winter storm. So as the season starts, bear all these things in mind to readily deal with any situation that might arise.

Is Natural Pesticide All That Natural?

People have been using natural insecticides for thousands of years. In the beginning, they used these ways to keep their residences free of insects, but probably were not able to use the same techniques on their crops.

For example, a large number of flies do not like basil or mint, so if you hang that up in your entrance, you will reduce the number of flies in your house, but doing that in a field is more tricky. The ancients never found a way of dealing with locusts.

These days, rather than repel, we would rather to kill. Not only that though, chemicals that are derived from plants are often synthesized, because there is more demand for the pesticide than there are plants. Chemical insecticides are more concentrated as well. So, now we have the question, is natural insecticide all that natural?

This question is quite troublesome to those who worry about polluting the planet with too many chemicals. In fact, there is a mounting number of people who are troubled about these issues and there has been since the hippy days of the Seventies and even before. Environmentalists worry about the effect mankind is having on our environment by the over use of chemicals, particularly, but not only, insecticides.

This is why natural pesticides have seen a resurrection and why so many insecticide manufacturers like to add the words ‘natural’, ‘environmentally friendly’ or ‘eco friendly’ to their products’ labels. In fact, many are just jumping onto the eco friendly band wagon.

Look on the box, if there is a word you cannot read or do not understand or is over ten letters long, it is probably a chemical. Which is not to say that it cannot be eco-friendly, but just to remind you that it is not entirely as natural as it may say on the box.

In fact, there are two camps. There are the naturalists who acknowledge that some natural products that are in massive demand, have to be man-made because there is not enough natural product and there are the purists who spurn man-made copies completely. For example, the latter group would not buy anything that comes in a pressurized can, but they would consider using a mixture of ingredients in a plastic plunger-type spray.

There is a very fine line indeed between say, synthesized citronella mosquito repellent and citronella essential oil that you have extracted from the citronella plant and mixed with alcohol or water and put into your own plunger-type spray. They are basically the same thing, but not quite are they?

At the end of the day, you are the one with your principles and so the choice is yours. Luckily, we have a fabulous resource for study at our finger tips, namely the Internet. If you have values and you are free-thinking, check out the ingredients of that ‘all natural cockroach killer’ on the Internet, before you part with your money, because there positively are environmentally friendly solutions available and they can be found in the shops, but they are normally on the bottom shelf because they do not produce so much profit.

Why Use Solar Energy?

Chances are, you are already using solar energy in a variety of forms. It is the primary fuel source in the creation of food, fresh water, petroleum, and wood. The question we propose is “why use solar energy to power your homes”? Is it realistic for generating useful heat and electricity?

The answers to this question are simple. There is no other source of energy on the planet more reliable than solar energy. When is the last time you woke up in the morning and there was no Sun?

The other great benefit is that solar energy is cheap. The Sun does not send out monthly bills, and last we checked there are no taxes on solar energy. If there is a less expensive source of energy on this planet, then we would like to know.

It can be argued that solar energy systems are not extremely efficient. And we will not argue because this is true. But the thing to remember is this: solar energy systems are improving each and every year, and no matter what the efficiency is there is zero cost for the fuel.

The difficulties in using solar energy are with selecting the right application and the right equipment. How much does a solar energy system cost and how difficult is it to integrate? How simple or elaborate should it be? In my location, is solar energy right for me? Here we present a few straight forward answers to help your case.

If you have a sunny climate with lots of solar energy, then put it to use. You will save money in the long run, and living in an environmentally friendly way. We would estimate that at least 50% of the United States could be using solar energy in some way.

The more rainy and foggy your climate tends to be, and the more north you go, then the more difficult the prospects for using solar energy. A little more calculation and investigation may be needed.

The most simple and cost effective solar energy systems are designed for acquiring heat. They can be used for making hot water, storing thermal energy, among many other things. If your have cool Winters and lots of sun then you are a particularly good candidate for using passive solar heat.

Another popular form of solar energy is Photovoltaic (PV) electricity. These semi-conductor panels will convert solar radiation into useful electricity. It is true that there is a significant manufacturing investment in making PV panels, and they can cost some money. So the decision to make PV electricity should be more carefully considered.

The more efficiently you use electricity, then the more Photovoltaic energy is right for you. PV systems can involve significant up front costs, but they will pay themselves off over the long run. This time period for payoff depends on your Utility’s electrical rate, and the amount of electricity you plan to use. In certain States experiencing high electrical rates, such as California (which has a lot of Sun), absolutely a solar energy system could be right for you.
