waste management
The building trade and the commercial trade are now starting to realise the benefits of recycling the waste they produce. Recycling is now an important part of all our lives and most of us do our bit for the planet by recycling everything we can.
From the colour coded recycling bins we have at home to the recycling bays at your local supermarket, you can always find somewhere to recycle your waste. However, this is not always the case for the building trade, who sometimes skip all their waste together. Because landfill costs are rising all the time, this might not be the way to do things in the future.
Recycling most of the waste you create is the way forward. And if you use a waste management company to look after the waste you produce, you will be able to recycle around 90% of all the waste generated. This is not only good for the environment, but also good for your pocket, as the disposal of segregated waste is much cheaper then the disposal of mixed waste.
Thousands of pounds can be saved every year by those companies which choose to segregate the waste they produce instead of skipping it all together. Materials can be sorted into metal waste, wood waste, paper waste and even rubble. It’s not uncommon to find that the price of skip hire can also be reduced if segregated waste is placed into the skip.
The amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere can be reduced when you recycle, as the amount of energy needed to recycle goods is less than is needed to manufacturer goods from raw materials. This means you can boost your environmental credentials.
Waste management companies can help you with many aspects of waste removal and collection and offer services such as skip hire and hazardous waste removal.

Many people use skips for the disposal of large quantities of waste. A skip is simply dropped off by a skip hire company outside the building job and then the workers can fill up the skip as needed to dispose of the waste.
Skip hire permits will not usually be needed if the skip is to be placed on private property. However, if the skip needs to be placed on a road or on a public highway then you’ll have to apply for a skip hire permit.
Skip hire permits are available from your local council and can cost upwards of 30, but generally not more than 60. The permit entitles the skip to be placed on a road for a certain number of days or nights and will usually take around four or five days to be processed.
If you use a skip hire company who have links with your local council, they can generally sort out the skip hire permit for you. Because the skip hire company have regular dealings with the council, there is a good chance that your permit will be issued quickly too.
With landfill costs increasing all the time it has become more important than ever to dispose of your waste with the environment in mind. In fact, around 90% of the waste you dispose of in a skip will be recycled and not sent to landfill.
Because costs for disposing waste can be high, it can benefit the builder to segregate waste before disposal, as occasional the skip hire company will offer a discount for valuable waste or waste which is already sorted.

To make the skip hire process go smoothly there are a few things you might need to know.
It is really easy to hire a skip, but because there are a lot of different types of skips available, and many people have never hired a skip before, it can become confusing. Large building firms regularly hire skips and usually have contracts with a number of skip hire companies who they use on an ad hoc basis. This can work quite well, but a way of controlling how much you spend and what resources have been used on waste management is to use a UK wide skip hire company.
A UK wide skip hire company can offer you a complete waste management solution, no matter where your next building project is based. They will be able to provide you with a personal account manager and help you with your waste management activities so you can reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
Estimating the amount of waste you produce is really important so you get the right sized skip. If you don’t do this it could be the case that you will have to hire a number of subsequent skips to take the waste away. However, if you plan the type and size of skip you get at the start of your project, you will be able to save money by reducing the number of skips you need.
If you don’t have enough space to put a skip on your own property, you may have to put it on the road. And if you find you need to do this, you will have to contact the local council to arrange a skip hire permit. Permits can take a few days to be approved so you will need to consider this before hiring the skip.
If you use a UK wide waste management company, they will be able to sort out the skip hire permit for you. They will also be able to give you your latest spending, tonnage, recycling and disposal statistics helping you manage your business more effectively.
