South Tyneside eco house showcases its green heating system to the all
Posted by: Jamie Driffield / Category: EnvironmentThe owners of a recently completed eco-house have recently opened its doors to the public to showcase its two brand new revolutionary, renewable heating systems.
The award-winning ‘Showhouse’ on Lukes Lane Estate in the small town of Hebburn is fitted with a solar water heating system and an air-sourced heat pump. The home is the first of 60 in the area that have been chosen by South Tyneside homes to receive such systems as part of the National Energy Action award scheme. These new systems can reduce energy bills by up to 30%.
The air-sourced heat pump is powered by electricity so helps reduce gas bills and CO2 emissions. The pump draws heat from the air outside then raises the temperature of it and redistributes it to radiators around the house.
Solar panels on the roof are used to heat the water supply, direct heat from the sun is used and water is then stored in a hot water container. If any of the water needs heating to a higher temperature or solar heat isn’t available then a standard immersion heater or boiler is used instead. The solar heating system provides around a third of hot water to the home. Double glazing has replaced old single glazed windows along with the fitting of improved cavity wall and loft insulation, all aimed to improve heat retention.
The charity, National Energy Action, recognised this new scheme as the best green project in the North East of England and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband is set to present the award to members of the South Tyneside Homes Development Team.
South Tyneside Homes took responsibility for managing council houses in the area from the council in 2006 and currently manage around 19,000 homes.
