Single Ply Roofing for a “Greener” Choice

Posted by: Tommy Scherer  /  Category: Home Improvement

“Green” is not always cheaper or better, but when it comes to flat roofs, going “green” can save you a lot of money and decrease your negative impact on the environment.

A “Single Ply” roof has a very distinctive look. It is white and reflects the sun. This reflective surface helps to dramatically conserve on energy and the material is much more durable than a traditional tar roof.

Single Ply lasts longer and reduces costs spent on maintenance and cooling. When it comes time to replace your roof, the old roof doesn’t even need to be removed because the single ply material is so light weight. This means less garbage and negative impact to the environment.

The traditional flat roof has been made up of layers and layers of hot tar with paper between. Every gallon of tar mopped onto a roof has brought with it billows of smoke filtering up into the sky. To say nothing of tar burns on innocent workers.

Hot tar no longer makes sense as a choice for your flat roof. Why use hot tar, when the roofing industry has come up with a superior solution that lasts longer, produces no harmful fumes, is recyclable and has a surface that reflects the sun (saving on energy bills)?

Flat roofing gives you many options to be creative and create even more of a “green” feel. For example, you can plant a garden on your single ply roof with grass, bushes, trees and flowers. This not only looks beautiful, it also helps the environment by retaining water and cleaning the air.

Many roofing businesses still specialize in hot tar and will therefore recommend it for your flat roof. Be sure to compare their offer with the offer of a company who specializes in single ply. It will be hard to miss why the advantages of single ply make it the top choice for those in the “know”.

Learn How To Compost The Easy Way

Posted by: Roger Gray  /  Category: Composting

Everyone understands the importance of recycling, and if you have a garden, you can also put recycling to good use for yourself. To many novice gardeners this subject can be somewhat difficult to grasp; but in fact it is really straightforward – there are just a few very simple rules:

The first thing to do is to buy a compost bin, the size of which depends on your garden.

You can buy a simple plastic compost bin from a garden center, and you will only need to fill it from the top and receive the compost from the small hatch in the bottom.

Alternatively, if you can wield a saw and some nails, you can make a wooden slatted enclosure, one metre square – or you can buy them ready made – and cover it with a piece of old carpet to keep the worst of the weather off.

What you can compost

Fruit peels and any uncooked vegetables. Teabags, coffee grains, and loose tea leaves. Egg shells Flowers that are no longer alive. And from the garden, soft prunings Leaves you rake and grass mowings. Old compost from house plants. Shredded paper from the dryer. Rabbit and guinea pig bedding.

Just make sure you have a good mix of materials, so the compost doesn’t get too wet or dry. The mix can use a good stir from time to time.

What NOT to compost

Anything animal derived or cooked food which will attract vermin. Cat and dog waste. Woody material – which takes too long to compost Weeds — the last thing you want in your compost is seeds that will spread. Items that don’t break down.

And, it is a good idea to keep a bin with a lid near your back door, which you can throw items into and empty into the larger compost bin once every day or two.

Over a period of time – 3 months to 1 year, depending on conditions – all this matter will have broken down into lovely dark brown crumbly compost, which you can fork into your beds and borders. It is great for conditioning the soil, and if used as surface mulch, it is wonderful for managing weeds.

Fallen leaves can become part of your compost also. Get leaves from your lawn and from your gardens. You can place the leaves in a large garbage bag, sprinkle some water in it and poke a few holes in the bag; then let it rest for about a year. At the end, you will have produced leaf mold.
