Do Electric Autos Stand A Chance In The Automotive Market?
Posted by: Seton Hill / Category: Hybrid CarElectric cars are relatively new; they have been on the market for around half a year now. The two main players on the market so far appear to be the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Volt. When we look at facts and figures, it appears as if the Volt is selling in much higher quantities when compared with the Leaf. In March Chevrolet announced that sales of the Volt would rise in May and that they expected that 10,000 Volts would be delivered by the end of the year. For the time being, it seems like electric cars won’t really take off until more charging stations are built and proper infrastructure is set up in order to support all users. Companies like General Electric and others are now offering special charging stations that can be set up at a home that will enable users to charge their autos much faster.
Cities are slowly starting to build more charging stations but the truth of the matter is that there aren’t enough stations at the moment. And finally the electric grid needs to be upgraded so that it can take on the thousands or even millions of electric cars some people expect to be on the road someday. Could this be slowing sales? Many people are also hesitant of a vehicle with a mileage range of around a few hundred miles. Many of us drive long distances to work and a car with a mileage range just would not be useful. Range would need to be extended in order to appeal to lots of people.
The Volt is a bit different and has an advantage over the Leaf because it is also equipped with a traditional motor that kicks in on an as needed basis. The engine works a generator so that the vehicle can keep on running at all times. Most electric cars do have a range restriction.
One electric auto that stands out from the rest of the crowd due to looks and power is the Fisker which is produced by Karma. It’s extremely exotic looking in terms of appearance and emphasizes performance. It can be driven in Sport and Stealth mode. It has a top speed of 95 mph in the Stealth mode and zooms from zero to sixty in just under eight seconds. The Sports Mode has a top speed of 125 mph. Performance like this doesn’t come cheap though. The base price starts at around the eighty thousand dollar mark.
