New Alternate Power Source, The Waste Gasifier

A gasifyer is used to heat wood or other organic matter to a temperature great enough to release the volatile elements inside. These gasses when liberated can be burned for heating, or ignited in an internal combustion engine to make energy. The gasifier is fundamentally a container that is insulated to keep in the heat.

The container has within it a layer of burning fuel. The bed of fuel is forced to combust under controlled conditions, by limiting the amount of air, and starts the gas production.

Being self contained has lots of advantages.

This pocket-sized controlled fire is exactly what is needed to allow the gasses to be released evenly. The heat produced is also used to dry up and heat up the wood chips, so that as they descend into the grating they are in the ideal status to replace the burnt-out mass. Temperatures of the order of 1200 degrees F should be aimed for. The combustible gasses produced rise and escape at the top of the gasifier. The gasses are then cooled and filtered, the cleaning is to cause less damage in an engine, and a denser gas has more power.

A specific advantage is a gasifyer is it is self contained yet small enough to be moveable by pallet or trailer. A four cylinder engine needs an oil barrel sized gas producer, but if the fuel is a waste product, the gas is just as good.

The types of fuel commonly used will be waste wood chips, chipped branches, coconut waste, rice and corn husks and even battery chicken shed litter. In certain parts a fuel crop such as a quick growing willow may be used.

This not only is a new source of fuel, but as commercial farming makes massive amounts of waste organic product, all of which costs cash to remove, but also land fill is reduced. A additional advantage is the remainder from the gasifier is hugely useful as a land conditioner and fertiliser, making the whole operation even greener.

A large industrial gasifier may have to be used in an district heating project or in a large farm yard waste energy producer in order to acquire economies of scale.

My specific interest is in reducing the expense of home energy production or yet off grid living.

household gasification has the additional benefit of producing gasses, frequently called syngas, that are really clean burning, producing little or no pollution.

1 gallon of gasolene is said by many to be equivalent to 20lbs of dry chipped wood. A gasifier of appropriate size will provide all the gas to run a particular engine, the bigger the gasifier the bigger the engine. A gasifyer does not necessarily require any external power although this will help to start the machine, someone will however have to fuel the machine. With an internal combustion engine the inductance will suck air through the hearth creating a self sustaining sequence.

A gasifyer with a gasoline or diesel engine generator and a ready supply of fuel, makes this an ideal alternative energy source.

This Process is over Two Centuries old, but is just as useful now when the world needs an appropriate new fuel source.
