Teen rooms are a headache for mothers everywhere. It’s not even like when they were younger. In those days, if their rooms were in a mess, you could shout at them and get them to tidy it up, and, if that didn’t work, you could go in and do it. However, when it comes to teens and their rooms you’re dealing with something whole different.

True, you could go and tell them to tidy up their rooms. And true, you could shout at them a bit too, if you wanted to, or you could go and tidy up the room yourself. However, that’s when the trouble begins. Teen rooms are private places and not to be entered into unless you’re invited to.

Heaven help the person who dares to clean up even one inch of that mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you had absolutely no right to move it. At least, that will be what most teens will argue, and you being the patient, caring mother that you are, will just roll your eyes skywards and explain that the pizza and three-day-old shirt thing just don’t go well together and you were just rescuing them from impending disease.

And in their turn, your teens will roll their eyes and scream, that you should not exaggerate, it wasn’t about to develop legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn’t that make a fantastic science project. So, you keep cleaning and they keep putting things right back. And you end up right back to square one.

Naturally, one way you could deal with this bomb site is to redecorate it. Teen rooms might be sanctums for them, but even they would like it if you gave their rooms a great makeover.

That doesn’t mean that the room will be any tidier after they have moved back in, but at least you’ll have been able to seen the inside of the room long enough to tide you over for the next few years. That is unless you’re thinking of redoing their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem. Since teens are famously different when it comes to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated quite differently from what you expected and what you would have done first of all. This is where a comprise should be struck, if your teen wants black for his room, then say you want another colour too that will offset the black.

Be prepared to give in a little on your ideas no matter how ridiculous their ideas seem to you. After all, they’re only a teen for a while and later on they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had had.

As a parent it is your duty to give them these moments in their lives which they can look back on with due horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.
