Deciding To Go With Natural Flooring

Home builders have a lot of choices when it comes to installing a quality floor. There are a lot of traditional products that have been popular choices for many years, but some builders and designers are finding that there are some natural flooring options that provide a great, unique look out of materials that are far less harmful to the environment and use up less of our natural resources.

There are a lot of materials on the market that make good eco friendly flooring materials. If you are looking for a good alternative, there are a lot of good choices. The manufacturing process involved with them has also made it possible to get the quality and the look you really want.

One of the more popular natural flooring options is bamboo. This material acts just like hardwood and tends to be just as hard as red oak or hard maple. Harvesting it is simple and won’t harm the plant. Since it is classified as a grass it will simple start to grow back, and in three to five years it can be harvested again.

Cork flooring has become another popular choice. This material can be very attractive and won’t have a harmful impact on our natural resources. A cork oak tree can produce hundreds of pounds of cork ever seven to ten years, and it won’t have a detrimental effect on the trees when it is harvested. When it is installed, this natural flooring is a natural insulator, and offers hypoallergenic qualities as well.

If you must have a classic hardwood floor, you should consider the materials that come from a reclamation project. Buildings that were constructed a long time ago and don’t live up to current standards are subject to demolition. There are a lot of structural timbers there that can be salvaged and sawn for use in another project. The look of this wood can be surprisingly attractive.

There are other recycled materials that make quality natural flooring as well. For example, recycled cork and rubber can be combined to form an extremely durable and attractive substance. There is also linoleum (not vinyl flooring) that is made from linseed oil, pine flour, and natural jute backing – all renewable sources for a great looking floor.

Before you buy natural flooring, though, you should ask yourself a few questions to make sure the materials you buy really are environmentally sound. First, does it come from recycled or renewable materials? Second, is the harvesting and manufacturing done in a sound manner? Third, how long will it last? And finally, is it biodegradable?

When you can answer all these questions about the different natural flooring options, you are sure to get a product that looks great, will last a long time, and won’t cause undue harm to environment in the process.

There are a lot of green things that you can do when building your new home. One of Tom Minson’s favorite’s is to use natural flooring (often referred to as eco friendly flooring ). The reason this is one of his favorites is because it can give character to a home with a unique style.
