LED Downlights Longer Life, Less Cost, Better Environment
Posted by: Christopher Baty / Category: Energy ConservationConventional incandescent lighting has served us well for many years. That technology is now rapidly becoming outdated in favor of light emitting diodes (LEDs). LED downlights are strongly contributing to that trend. They are being used indoors and outdoors in some of the most demanding environments known to man. For example, they are increasingly specified for use on recreational and commercial vessels, even externally on masts and decks.
LEDs offer three big benefits over incandescent lighting. First, they chew up much less energy; most consume only a handful of watts. Second, they are produced at lower cost. Third, they last a lot, lot longer. These three benefits add up to lots more value.
Perhaps their most significant advantage is that they consume much less energy than standard light bulbs. Their manufacture also requires less energy. Both these energy savings mean that LEDs significantly lower overall carbon emissions and are a major plus for the environment.
An LED lasts anywhere from about 40,000 up to a staggering 100,000 hrs of continuous working life. That means changing a unit as infrequently as once every 11.5 years. By comparison, incandescent globes might last about 2-4,000 hrs. Illumination erosion is minimal, with a maximum degradation of about 20 percent after 40,000 hrs.
The barely credible longevity of LEDs reflects the combination of at least three important factors. First, they do not incorporate any glass or any filament. Second, they generate little heat. Third, they are produced using a tough resin that is almost unbreakable.
Because of their low heat, low power requirements and absence of noxious fumes, LEDs have a higher overall safety rating. One final advantage is that LEDs do not contain any mercury. By contrast, this toxic material is found in many fluorescent lamps. These factors are particularly important for lighting in settings occupied by small children.
Their inherent toughness and reliability means that they can be used with confidence in many extreme settings. Critical marine and aviation applications are prime examples. They are less likely to fail when security and safety are important.
Most people find the light produced by LEDs to be pleasant and effective. Different grades allow people to choose wither a bright light or a so-called warm light that is inviting and comfortable. Many LED fittings are available in styles, designs, sizes and colors to suit everyone. Fully-recessed or semi-recessed fittings; polished metal or matt finish; white or colored, a seemingly infinite variety are available for the choosing. LED downlights are already making an impact and will continue to grow in popularity. Check them out for yourself.
