How To Protect Your Home From Theft
Posted by: Dwayne Stoltzfus / Category: Conservation & ProtectionThere are three degrees of protection for every Home Alarm System, the visual “front line of defense”, the actual system itself, and the Police response. These defenses work together to provide a safe and welcoming home. Understanding these levels of security will lead to success at your house.
The first line of defense is visual; this includes things such as yard signs and window decals. These things give visual defenses to let potential burglars know there is a security system present, and it’s being monitored. The yard sign should be positioned somewhere highly visible such as the front of the home, with window decals on east, west, and south sides. They should be free from obstructions such as trees, bushes, and flowers. This is your first line of defense. Things could be unpleasant for the burglar that pays no attention to this warning.
The second line of defense is the security system itself. The security system should contain protection for all entry points to the home, and if broken into will make loud sounds. This is the burglar’s 2nd warning, and ignoring it will be highly unpleasant. You want to be able to know your alarm is always armed. Now on the security system there are more safety functions for the homeowner. Distress buttons to advance the system for police, fire, and medical, are some examples of several safety features.
The third line of defense is the Police. If a burglar ignores the first two warnings, the Police will quickly remind them of the importance of adhering to warnings. When a central monitoring station monitors your security system, it receives information on break-ins, and notifies the local authority.
With these three levels of security working together, a home reaches its maximum level of protection. Without just one aspect of security the whole system falls apart. It doesn’t matter if the outside of the house looks like a fortress, if the second and third lines of defense are not working in collaboration with the first line of defense, the system fails to protect the home.
